The Egyptian Lover

Traditionally, DJs have not bothered too much with wardrobe. Up there on the decks, presiding over the dance floor, a T-shirt usually suffices. But in the early '80s, Greg Broussard — with his bouffant do, sculpted facial hair, fancy jackets and yen for all things Nubian — stood out as he sprinkled gold dust on records as the Egyptian Lover. Among the pioneering electro DJs of that era, the Los Angeles-bred Lover fused Kraftwerk-style drum-machine skitters and synthesizer melodies with hip-hop, dance music and funk, much in the way Afrika Bambaataa did on his 1982 groundbreaker "Planet Rock." With tracks such as the funky "Egypt, Egypt" and the East Coast-rap-saluting "What Is a DJ If He Can't Scratch?" Egyptian Lover's 1984 debut, On the Nile, is a retro playground on which today's party people should have no trouble getting busy. Expect hard jams from the early days and new stuff from his latest, Platinum Pyramids, when the pharoah of electro-hop spins at the Sikenomics Clothing fall release party.
