Poets, Poets Everywhere

Author, poet and University of Kansas associate professor Joseph Harrington says that around 37 percent of Lawrence's nearly 90,000 residents either write poetry or are reincarnations of people who have.Among the nearly 33,000 Lawrencians who claim poet status are Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, Chantel Guidry, Nancy Hubble and Dixie Lubin. In addition to writing poetry, Mirriam-Goldberg sometimes teaches at Goddard College in Vermont and is the author of seven books; she also facilitates workshops for Kansas Citians with cancer. Guidry is an activist and artist. Hubble, a former bookstore owner, writes and makes art. Lubin leads creative-writing workshops.The foursome gathers tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Raven Bookstore (8 East Seventh Street, Lawrence, 785-749-3300) for Wild Women (W)Rite!: A Display of Poetic Fireworks in the Dead of Summer. Along with the readings, attendees are encouraged to enjoy wine, cookies and, according to co-owner Lisa Stockton, mill about.
